The Venue

Polychroniadio Megaro Arkasa

The ancient Arkesia located on the coast by the south west side of Kárpathos has many treasures to explore.

The Acropolis of the village (Akr(i)o-polis the edge of the city) also called Palliokastro is on top of the peninsula with ruins of cyclopean walls.

Kárpathos first port Arkasa was affiliated with Sparta during the Peloponnese war and is mentioned in Iliad, the Argonauts, Ptolemy stories. But also later in the Roman times and Byzantine times was an important venue.

It is said that the emperor of Rome Loukoulos was sending galleys to bring him fresh fish from Karpathos and most particular a fish called Scaros a delicacy found especially on this island.

The Ancient Greek and Byzantine mosaics of St Sophia are unique to explore during a nice walk towards St Nicholas sandy beach.

Traditional taverns are found all around the village, in the plateia (square) or on the main streets and naturally in the sokakia (alleys connecting the neighborhoods of the village)

The houses in the old part of the village are kept with the traditional decoration and may be more than 150 years old.

Day trips to near by beaches and the culturally preserved village of Olympos is possible either by car rentals or boat.
